The Finish Is Where Good Construction Becomes a Finished Building
Caulking, paint, stain, and interior finish work should be planned as a sequence — not selected as disconnected add-ons.
Every structure is built as a premium exterior shell. Finish decisions determine how the building weathers, how it relates to the home, and whether the final result feels like a finished architectural feature or simply a structure waiting for attention.
Primed and Ready Is Not the Same as Finished
The Vintage Shed Company can hand off a structure structurally complete and primed, with finish paint or stain handled by the owner, or finish services can be confirmed before the build. Caulking, final paint, stain, and interior finish painting should be selected clearly so there is no confusion about what is included.
The Correct Order Protects the Finished Result
The best-looking finish begins with the least glamorous step: sealed joints, seams, corners, and openings.
Caulk First
Sealing joints and openings before finish coats helps protect the paint or stain from premature failure at seams.
Paint or Stain Second
Paint belongs on LP SmartSide® and painted siding systems. Stain belongs on compatible cedar and natural wood surfaces.
Interior Finish Last
Interior paint follows finished wall surfaces, not raw framing. Drywall, T&G, shiplap, or plywood wall board should be planned first.
Caulking, Exterior Paint, Exterior Stain & Interior Finish Painting
Prices are shown as at-build or post-handoff services. At-build work is planned into the original sequence. Post-handoff work requires a separate return engagement.
Exterior Caulking
The correct first step for any structure that will be painted or stained. Full packages address joints, seams, corners, and opening perimeters in one engagement.
| Option | At Build | Post-Handoff |
|---|---|---|
| Full Caulk Package — Small | $504 flat | $720 flat |
| Full Caulk Package — Medium Most Selected | $648 flat | $936 flat |
| Full Caulk Package — Large | $864 flat | $1,224 flat |
| Exterior Joint & Seam Caulk | $7.92 /lin ft | $10.80 /lin ft |
The full caulk package is the correct selection when the building will receive paint or stain.
Exterior Paint
For LP SmartSide® and all painted siding systems. Pricing includes primer touch-up over caulked areas, two finish coats, and cleanup.
| Option | At Build | Post-Handoff |
|---|---|---|
| Single Color, Full Exterior — 2 Coats Most Selected | $9.00 /sq ft | $12.24 /sq ft |
| Two-Tone: Body + Contrasting Trim — 2 Coats Each | $11.88 /sq ft | $15.84 /sq ft |
| Three-Color: Body + Trim + Accent Doors / Hardware | $14.40 /sq ft | $18.72 /sq ft |
| Spray Application Upgrade | +$2.16 /sq ft | +$2.88 /sq ft |
| Premium Grade — BM Aura or SW Duration Emerald | +$1.08 /sq ft | +$1.44 /sq ft |
| Porch Floor / Ramp Paint | $5.04 /sq ft | $7.20 /sq ft |
Two-tone paint is usually the best exterior upgrade when the building is visible from the home.
Exterior Stain
For cedar, T&G, cedar clapboard, and cedar shake siding. LP SmartSide® is not stain-compatible and should be painted.
| Option | At Build | Post-Handoff |
|---|---|---|
| Semi-Transparent Stain — 2 Coats Natural | $6.48 /sq ft | $9.36 /sq ft |
| Solid-Color Stain — 2 Coats | $7.92 /sq ft | $10.80 /sq ft |
| Cedar Natural Tone + Sealer | $7.20 /sq ft | $10.08 /sq ft |
| Porch / Deck / Ramp Stain | $5.04 /sq ft | $7.20 /sq ft |
| Stain Refresh Coat — Existing Stained Surface | N/A | $3.60 /sq ft |
Semi-transparent stain preserves grain character. Solid stain offers a longer refresh cycle with more coverage.
Interior Finish Painting
For finished interior surfaces only. Raw stud bays are not painted. Drywall, T&G, shiplap, or plywood wall board should be selected first.
| Option | At Build | Post-Handoff |
|---|---|---|
| Plywood Wall Board, Single Color — 2 Coats | $3.60 /sq ft | $5.40 /sq ft |
| Drywall Interior, Single Color — 2 Coats | $5.76 /sq ft | $7.92 /sq ft |
| Drywall Interior, Two Colors — Walls + Ceiling | $7.20 /sq ft | $9.72 /sq ft |
| T&G / Shiplap Interior Stain + Topcoat | $7.92 /sq ft | $10.80 /sq ft |
Interior finish pricing assumes finished wall or ceiling surfaces have already been selected in the project scope.
Start With a Curated Direction — Then Confirm With Real Samples
The three color modules below can be edited later without touching this main page.
Screen colors are useful for narrowing the direction, but final paint and stain selections should be confirmed with physical manufacturer samples. The Vintage Shed Company can help narrow the palette by siding type, property style, trim contrast, and whether the building should blend quietly or become a focal point.

Straight Answers About Paint, Stain, and Finish Work
Clear finish expectations prevent confusion after the building is complete.
- Is paint or stain included in base pricing?
- Final paint and stain are finish options unless specifically included in the written scope. The building can be handed off primed and ready, or finish services can be selected before the build.
- Why does caulking come first?
- Paint or stain over unsealed joints can fail at those joints first. Caulking seals vulnerable seams before the finish coat is applied.
- Can LP SmartSide® be stained?
- No. LP SmartSide® and painted siding systems should receive exterior paint, not penetrating stain.
- When should colors be finalized?
- Colors should be narrowed digitally, then confirmed with physical manufacturer samples before the finish service begins.
Finish the Building With the Same Discipline Used to Build It
The finish should protect the structure, complement the property, and make the building feel intentional from the first day it is complete.
Curated Paint Directions for Painted Siding
Use these colors as a starting point for LP SmartSide®, board-and-batten, lap siding, trim, doors, and accent combinations. Final selections should be confirmed with physical manufacturer samples.
Custom matching can be handled from a chip, existing paint can, home trim sample, or manufacturer sample card. Screen colors are only a planning aid.
Natural Wood Tones With Visible Grain
Semi-transparent stain is best for cedar and natural wood surfaces where the grain should remain part of the finished appearance.
Semi-transparent stain will vary with wood species, grain, age, and surface preparation. Physical samples are essential before final approval.
Fuller Coverage for Stain-Compatible Wood
Solid stain gives wood surfaces a more painted appearance while still remaining a stain system. It is best when longer refresh cycles and stronger color control are preferred.
Solid stain colors should be checked on the actual wood species whenever possible. The same color can look warmer, cooler, or darker depending on surface texture and absorption.
